Sash Cord Repairs

sash cord repair

The sash cord is an essential part of a sash window. Unfortunately, the most common repairs to a sash window are usually because of a broken sash window cord. Generally, the sash window cord will worsen or become frayed and snap over many years. Or when you have your sash window painted, sometimes the decorator paints the sash window cord, so they become brittle and break. As a result, the sash window will no longer function properly. Please visit our spiral balance page if you have a sash window but don’t have cords.

So, It Is crucial to keep sash cords free of paint. For instance, it becomes jammed, stuck, won’t stay up or keeps dropping. It’s more than likely that the sash cord will need replacing.

Also, if your window appears to have good sash cords attached but does not stay open, your windows may need re-balancing. Please visit our sash window restoration page for more information on re-balancing or our draught-proofing page.

rot repair

Rot repair

Rot in sash windows should be addressed and repaired as soon as you discover it.

When the wood is left to rot in a sash window, it can start to cause all sorts of problems not only for the rest of the sash window and can lead to blowing of the interior plasterwork.

When your windowsill starts to rot, you should get the rotten section or the whole windowsill replaced. Sometimes lower portions of the sash box frame may also need replacing. It is common practice for decorators or a handyman to put filler on top of rotten wood to cover the damage. Unfortunately, the filler will only last for a short while before another repair is needed. Therefore, complete replacement of the windowsill and lower box frames is recommended.
